Volkswagen introduces the new CCS engine

Volkswagen has just unveiled the new CCS (Combined Combustion System) engine which is a combination of the positive characteristics of the petrol and the diesel engine. This engine is low on emissions, has high efficiency on power and runs on synthetic bio-fuel. This engine is the realization of the strict emission standards imposed on automobiles and the increased demand for fuel efficient engines.

This engine of the future is a advanced four cylinder based on a the German car maker upcoming 2L common rail diesel engine due to head into production in 2008. It was designed to meld the homogeneous combustion and low nitrous oxide emissions of a typical small capacity petrol powerplant with the self ignition and low fuel consumption properties of a modern day diesel – the aim being to combine the best attributes of each.

The engine uses the latest piezo injector technology from German electronics specialist Bosch, the CCS engine is able to begin the combustion process within each cylinder much earlier than in existing diesels, which tend to start shortly after the piston reaches top dead centre. As the fuel is ignited for longer period of time the CCS engine proves to be more economical. VW has made claims that the consumption is improved by around five per cent on the European combined cycle test, which involves a mixture of city and motorway driving.

A special synthetic fuel has been developed for this type of engine which is a CO2-neutral biomass mixture containing no petrol or diesel, but rather created using forest or industrial waste as well as bio-degradable rubbish, animal waste and specially planted crops. “The fuel can be delivered through normal filling stations,” says Kohnen.

As Volkswagen has said this engine does sound promising but I am not too keen on the new type of fuel. Will it really be “ok” to use it in gas stations, and also the engine above all safe? As for the emission, VW claims that the engine will be ready for inclusion in production cars from early next decade…but there are various other hybrids and fuel cell variants which might develop fast. Only time will tell for which engine comes out on top for lowest emission rate.
