Toyota plans ultra-low-cost car

TOYOTA_logo.jpgToyota’s president Katsuaki Watanabe told Britain's Financial Times that the company is planning to build “ultra-low-cost car” through a "radical" rethink in design and production. "The focus is on low-cost technology," he said in the interview. He also mentioned that the vehicle will challenge Renault's $6,200 Logan which is sold in China and Russia. "Everything from design to production methods will be radically changed and we are thinking of a really ultra-low-cost way of designing, using ultra-low-cost materials, even developing new materials if necessary," he said.

Therefore, what does it mean for us folks? A cheaper vehicle is certainly a better option for most of us as more people will be able to afford it. However, does it mean that Toyota will be cutting down on the quality of workmanship and the materials used? In addition, will these vehicles be substandard when it comes to safety issues? I know they are talking about developing “new materials” etc…however, will these “new materials” be just as good is yet to be seen.
