Toyota Japan takes a cue from Lexus America, unveils the estima with "Free Format" technology

Those of us who are car freaks will remember when Police had to be called in at Times Square to control the crowds, sometime in November last year. Lexus had unveiled its latest offering, the Lexus IS. But it was not just the car that was generating so much interest. It was the way in which Toyota was showing it off. They were using a three dimensional hologram technology called as "Free format" making the car spin, stop and in short show off to the crowds. The best part was a touch screen which allowed visitors to change the size, color, and setting of the car that was spinning around in front of them.

Free Format is flexible, allowing users to tie in interactivity and real props. The standard screen is eight feet tall, and there is no limit to its length, thanks to the fact that multiple projectors can be used. Toyota decided to do the same thing when they unveiled the "Estima" in Japan. Check out the pictures showing the car in extreme detail , we have used ones with double images to show that these are holograms, it is impossible to make out otherwise.

Since Casanovacars is a car site and not one on holograms, lets come to the Estima itself. Worth reading about is the excellent sound system in the car, which uses NXT technology which is the first time ever for a car.

A new generation of stylish and luxurious vehicle, the Estima is Toyota’s latest minivan and is equipped with many innovative features, focused around a luxurious cabin designed to offer passengers maximum comfort levels and class-leading entertainment options during journeys. Available with a choice of engines – 2.4 litre or 3.5 litre - the vehicle’s refined, contemporary styling is designed to evoke the identity of the Estima in a sophisticated ‘one-motion’ form.

The clean, open interior is accented by a high-tech-looking central panel and the Estima is equipped with ‘club-style’ second-row seats (complete with built-in footrests) and power foldaway third-row seats enabling the complete transformation of the interior in seconds – luxury MPV to spacious minivan at the touch of a button.

The Estima’s impressive entertainment system is designed to increase the performance level of music and films on the move and incorporates a full-length NXT-enabled roof liner to dramatically enhance the sound. The direct-drive NXT loudspeaker system delivers a truly immersive sound field to envelope passengers in high quality, rich audio. Depending on model specification, two separate sound systems are available, both built around the NXT-equipped roof liner (speakers throught the roof! woo hoo!!)

- 1) Estima Panoramic Super Live Sound System; 11 loudspeakers (four NXT speakers (roof liner), one centre channel and six conventional speakers), DSP for high quality sound even in the rear seats, HDD navigation system with sound library
2) Estima Panoramic Live Sound System - eight speakers (two NXT speakers (roof liner), plus six conventional speakers), HDD navigation system with sound library
The car which went on sale in Japan a few days back costs approximately 22,775 USD.
