ChromaFlair Color Shift Pigments Create Dazzling Effects for Scion

Toyota has produced a special edition Scion xB with a special ChromaFlair colour-shifting pigment that makes the car change colour when vied from various angels. In addition to ChromaFlair, JDSU offers SpectraFlair(R) pigment. SpectraFlair utilizes a diffractive pigment structure exhibiting multiple rainbow colors as the viewing angle changes. The 2006 xB R.S. 4.0 will come in Maziora Torched Penny exterior paint. Maziora, by Nippon Paint, is a paint line that changes color depending on the viewing angle or light reflection. The Maziora line was also featured on a Japanese domestic special edition bB and has been used on several OEM and show cars worldwide. Toyota will produce 2,500 of the special edition Scion xB's for the U.S. market.

"The huge success of Scion stems from the company's ability to offer a myriad of choices and options to its customers. The release of the xB 2006 R.S. 4.0 builds on that tradition and delivers a highly differentiated color choice," said Roy Bie, vice president and general manager, Advanced Optical Technologies Product Group. "Many automakers are turning to differentiation, especially in specialty paint choices, as a way to attract new buyers to their brands."

ChromaFlair pigment enables specialty light effects and is added to paint to produce a unique visual impact. ChromaFlair is a light interference pigment that produces a color change when viewed from different angles. In addition to ChromaFlair, JDSU offers SpectraFlair(R) pigment. SpectraFlair utilizes a diffractive pigment structure exhibiting multiple rainbow colors as the viewing angle changes.

The car does have a unique colour but it also looks like a box with wheels glued onto it. Not my favorites when it comes to the exterior and also the colour doesn’t look all that great…looks somewhat like dried algae. It’s hard to see that they plan to make 2500 of these. I wouldn’t be caught dead with one of these. But then again that just what I think. As for the success it will be clear when they actually introduce it into the market.
