- Auto Theft - Gone in 60 seconds
-

"Ocean's eleven" was followed by "Ocean's twelve", "Mission Impossible" by "MI 2" then "MI 3"...well don't be surprised if the next movie that comes after "Gone is 60 seconds" is named as "Gone in 26 seconds". Reason, the 2004 Theft Statistics Show that Every 26 seconds, a motor vehicle is stolen in the United States with odds of 1 to 190 in 2003 as per the latest available data. Reasons are different, like stealing a vehicle for dismantling their components and selling them, such as the Honda Civic - the most stolen vehicle in 2004. These cars have been top sellers for many years and some of their parts are interchangeable which makes them favorable targets. Add in games like the GTA which goes further to inspire teens to try their luck at Grand Theft Auto for thrill seeking or just the old fashioned joy ride you have a crime that's always on the rise.
Some of these "Joy Rides" end in tragic accidents in car chases...only thing they are good for...well maybe "The World Most Amazing Videos" or something on those lines. But no tragedy involving someone's life or hard earned money is worth that. It goes without saying that something needs to be done about it. It certainly cannot be stopped as long as we will have Thieves or the so called "Thrill Seekers"...so where does that leave us?
Yes, the police are expected to play their part but we too have to show a bit of common sense...then again its not so common so here are a few tips.Secure Your Vehicle
Rule 1: Common Sense - Lock your doors and don't leave a spare key in the car. Do not leave valuable visible and park in a well lit area whenever possible.
Rule 2: Warning Devices - Visible or audible device alerts thieves that your vehicle is protected before they attempt to steal it. Works something like the "Beware of dogs" sign.
Rule 3: Immobilizing Devices - Electronic immobilizing devices prevent thieves from bypassing your ignition and hot wiring the vehicle.
Rule 4: Tracking Devices - A tracking system emits a signal to police or monitoring service when the vehicle is reported stolen.
Other precautions include a locking steering wheel. When parking in the street, turn the wheels toward the curb and set the parking brake. These steps can prevent your vehicle from becoming a towing theft. Don't leave personal and vehicle information in the glove compartment but keep it with you. Chemically etch your VIN on your car's window as VIN etched cars have a 64% lower theft rate than non-etched cars. An etched car that is stolen has a better chance of recovery and it is police recommendedAlso, getting your car insured is a smart idea, as in spite of all these precautions sometimes thieves do manage to steal a car. If u take these following steps to prevent auto theft it is also easier making insurance claims. Remember that a thief takes a risk while stealing a car...make it more difficult for him by taking the necessary steps which might get him caught or he might simply give up by saying "Too much work". In the end, its all up to you.
