Mercedes has announced that it will be adding the S 420CDI diesel engine to its S-Class lineup for the coming model year. This new variant of the diesel is an eight cylinder model powered by a V8 CDI engine and develops 320hp with a maximum torque of 538 lbs-ft. The new engine can do 0 to 62mph in 6.6seconds and reaches 155mph (electrically governed).

In normal city and highway driving conditions it can deliver fuel consumption of nearly 25mpg. The new S 420 CDI is available in Europe to order now with deliveries to customers due to start in December 2006. However, emissions regulations will likely prevent this non-Bluetec diesel from coming stateside.
