Honda's Diesel-Powered Dreams

honda-logo.jpgAccording to an interview given by Fukui to BusinessWeek.com at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Honda is about to bring out a number of diesel engines into the market. Now, there are obvious reasons surrounding the use of diesel and the damage that it causes through emissions and a hybrid powertrain would be a logical choice.

However, Honda claims that hybrid systems are good for smaller cars but bigger cars and sports utility vehicles need the more powerful diesel engines. In fact Fukui says to go that Honda has not yet decided whether the next-generation Accord family sedan will get a hybrid system when it hits the market late this year. It could get a diesel eventually.

There is a bit of a consolation with the advent of low-sulfur diesel as well as bio-diesel into the market which might reduce the dangers from emission if not totally remove. Honda need to think this over carefully as this is dangerous territory with new stringent laws coming into focus on pollution causing vehicles, which in my opinion are very important.
