Volt cannot be built

Copy%20of%20gm_volt2.jpgDark clouds are hovering over the spectacular new concept called the Volt, introduced by General Motors at this year’s Detroit Auto Show. The revolutionary new car of the future is one such concept that which, if built will redefine the term “fuel economy” and the harmful emissions from cars will take nose dive. When introduced by GM at the NAIAS in Detroit, claiming that the Volt was capable of giving 150mpg it was “a dream come true” for environmental enthusiasts. However, the future of the Volt does not look very bright.

For this concept to become a reality in its production version it is required to have a large lithium-ion battery weighing at nearly 400 pounds. However, experts predict that the required technology for making such type of a battery will not be ready as far as 2010 to 2012, and some even say that it maybe as long as 10 years! Also, Canny auto writer Steven Cole Smith points out that we might never see a Volt for sale.

This certainly isn’t good news for this new environmental friendly car…but it does show that GM is on the right track with the design of its revolutionary concepts and who knows…maybe they will overcome this problem sooner than expected and we will see the Volt on the streets.
