The new concept unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show by General Motors is the Volt…Volt as in electricity. Yes! You guessed it right, it’s yet again a “car of the future”, more fuel economical, less pollution, new and improved engine etc etc. But what’s impressive about the Volt concept is that it’s indeed an extremely fascinating car. Maybe that has something to do with its insane 150mpg performance…you read it right, that’s 150mpg. Keep reading. In the age of gasoline cars that run on fuel and the hybrid cars that run on half on fuel and half on electricity, the Volt emerges as a New Hero with the new E-Flex system which generates electricity from gasoline, ethanol, bio-diesel or hydrogen. This car can be fully charged by simply plugging it into a 110-volt outlet for approximately six hours a day. At full capacity it can give 40 city miles of range. Now, when the battery starts depleting, the engine runs at a constant speed to generate electricity to power electric motor and charge the battery.
Now for example if you travel 65miles you get 40 from the battery and 25 from the engine which does roughly about 50mpg which would then take you to 130mpg. Now this is just an example but the engine is reported to be averaging on 150mpg. What makes the design even clever is its ability to fit in different types of engines like the ones that run on gasoline, E85, diesel, bio-diesel or even hydrogen fuel cell.
The only thing that’s stopping this car is that lithium ion batteries large enough for operation aren’t in production. So folks, we just got to wait this one out
