Ford unveils PHEV Ford Edge with HySeries Drive at DC Auto Show

hyseries_edge_1280_12.jpgIt is good to see that all car companies are taking a big interest in developing more environmental friendly cars, which are low on dangerous emissions and good for the environment. Maybe if it all works out well, we will be driving one version or another of these many variants. First, there was the concept called Volt, which used the E-Flex system, and now here we have a Ford Edge with HySeries Drive. This impressive new concept was unveiled at the DC auto show. The HySeries Drive power-train was first shown in the Airstream concept.

This new plug-in series hybrid system uses a 336V lithium ion battery pack to drive the electric motor, which makes it the world's first drivable hydrogen fuel cell vehicle with plug-in capability. The full range of the Edge with such a powertrain is 225 miles with the first 25 available on battery alone, although some drivers have seen as much as 400. The estimate gasoline equivalent mileage of the HySeries Edge stands at 41 mpg city/highway. The latest fuel cells stacks by Ballard Power Systems are capable of operating at cold temperatures down to -20, giving it more flexibility. The new system also allows the flexibility in replacing the power systems for gas or diesel engines or even more batteries.

This is definitely a impressive car and I hope it is not marred by black clouds as the Volt has been.
