Top Gear - Jumping Mini

This is probably one of the funniest things I have ever seen on television. The legendry trio of BBC’s automotive show Top Gear recently staged their very own Top Gear Winter Olympics Ski Slash Car Jumping Champio! In which they had a Mini mounted on a pair of custom-made skis and fitted with three rockets by a team from the UKRA (United Kingdom Rocketry Association). These rockets provided enough thrust to propel the car at 83mph. The aim was to beat the mark of a ski jumper.

Top Gear - Jumping Mini

With all the rockets installed in place and the Mini fitted with the skis to keep it on track with the specially cut grooves it was time to launch. And launch it they did. From the video it is clear as to the amount of raw thrust that the rockets generated. But it did fail to beat the mark of the ski jumper. There are many speculations as to what was responsible for that…was it the lift opposed to gravity or the drag as the Mini was launched though the air. But that’s not the point! The point is that they actually launched the Mini over a notable distance while keeping it on track. They made sure of all the safety aspects and provided a fair amount of humor with it. It is just so much better than just dropping 300lbs safe on a Buick and I believe you would agree with me on that one.
